The Hudson Valley just had it’s second taste of snow this winter. From the long-range predictions by news weather forecasters, we can expect a steady stream of weather events for the foreseeable future.
Snow and ice pose a hazard for homeowners with sidewalks and access to public walkways. Hudson Valley residents often have a legal responsibility to remove snow when it could pose a safety hazard. property owners could face liability in court should they fail to carry out this obligation and someone is hurt.
Most towns and cities in New York make property owners obligated to remove snow that has accumulated on the sidewalk in front of their home. What to do when a Hudson Valley winter throws ice at you.

Frozen may work for Queen Elsa in the Pixar movie, but for us mere mortals, ice can register anywhere from frustrating to down right deadly on our "What I Hate About Winter" list. Unless you are strapping on skates right now, you might want to note here some ways to avoid frozen water problems.
ROOF ICE DAMS
Go look at your roof. If there's no snow on the shingles but snow on the overhangs, you're a candidate for ice dams. When a home has a poorly insulated roof, it will melt the snow on it. The resulting water hits cold overhanging gutters and freezes if it's below freezing outside (32 degrees F, 0 degrees C). The result is an ice dam, which backs up water onto and under the shingles. Who to call if your lights go out in the Hudson Valley.

If the lights go out during the predicted snow storm tonite, don’t call Orange and Rockland or your whoever your electrical service provider is until:
1. You’ve checked to be sure one of your breakers or fuses hasn’t tripped or blown. Check your electrical box first to see if all is well.
2. You have your information ready: name, address, phone (land line if possible, (save that cell phone battery), AND your power company account number (find it on an old bill or invoice.)
3. Are ready to tell your utility company the exact location of any hazardous conditions (trees on lines, downed utility poles, damaged transformers etc.)
4. Have the names and addresses of anyone you know using electrically operated life-sustaining equipment.
