A study of Americans fleeing the big cities last year found that Philadelphia and Miami were the top two choices of New Yorkers who left the Big Apple. But a surprising player in the relocation rush was Poughkeepsie, which came in third. The survey, by StreetLight Data, a transportation analytics firm, looked at migration out of the country's top ten metro areas and found that Poughkeepsie ranked eighth most popular relocation destination in the nation, up from 17th last year.
Like many Americans who relocated last year, Poughkeepsie's new residents were seeking smaller communities that offered both urban conveniences but with rural/suburban outdoor space. After living in cramped high-rise apartments and quarantined indoors for most of 2020, the thought of having a back yard to relax in or a quiet neighborhood to walk the dog in has made it hard to resist moving to communities in the Hudson Valley.

The line between living and playing blurs when you live in a village like Warwick, NY. The downtown is a vibrant and busy business district, larger and more active than in the towns around it. It carries an old-fashioned small-town feel, but with an assortment of sophisticated shops, restaurants, galleries and stores that make it truly a pleasant place to live.
Surrounding Warwick are the rolling foothills of the Catskill mountains, replete with dairy and horse farms, wineries and farm stands. But what makes Warwick’s rural nature truly unique are the six apple orchards, ranging from 45 acres to 200 acres, all in a five-square-mile area around the village. These orchards are one of the mainstays of village life, bringing with them an active tourist industry and plenty of entertainment for locals during the warm weather months.
The Town of Warwick, NY includes three unique villages (Florida, Greenwood Lake, and Warwick) and five hamlets (Amity, Bellvale, Edenville, New Milford ...

"What can I do to help? "
We’ve heard that phrase a lot lately. It seems to come naturally from people as we are bombarded with news about the devastating effects of the Coronavirus that is ravaging every nation in the world. But along with observing social distancing rules and pandemic-safe practices, is there actually anything you can do?
Actually, there is.
The daily Morning Brew newsletter I subscribe to recently listed a wide variety of places you can donate your time, support and/or money to during the pandemic.
The options in the article vary widely. Some are massive projects like the CDC’s Covid-19 Solidarity Response Fund which has already raised $236 million in donations from 633,000 donors, companies and philanthropic groups, or the Gates Foundation which targets the development of therapeutics to defend against the virus. Numerous major charities are mentioned, the R. ...

If you're planning a trek upstate this weekend on the promise of bright, clear fall weather and the hope of finding something else you can do with a mask on, you may want to sample this year's Mid-Hudson Valley crop of hard ciders.
New York State has long held the nation's number two spot for apple production, yielding a mind-boggling 29.5 million bushels a year—and that doesn't even take into account feral and fully wild trees on mountains and roadsides, abandoned orchards, and backyard bounty. While it is nowhere near surpassing Washington in apples cultivated, New York has taken the crown for the country's leading hard cider producer, with over 100 cideries. A small but growing number craft cider makers are using wild varieties in place of commercial fruit.
One of these, aptly named Abandoned Hard Cider, has recently established a tasting "Outpost" for it's cider on R. ...

The remnants of Hurricane Sally will be arriving overnight tonight to the Hudson Valley region. Fortunately for New York home owners, storms like Sally lose most of their punch traveling up the Eastern Seaboard and do little more than dampen the sidewalks. Needless to say, this has been an unusually active year for hurricanes, and for many homeowners, there is a risk they may lose lives, property, infrastructure and coastline sea walls. Strong hurricanes such as Sandy hitting the Hudson Valley, washed away possibly billions of dollars worth of homes, businesses, roads, and seawalls put in place to help protect coastlines.
For sellers whose properties are located in designated flood zones such as along the Hudson River, the risks presented by storms and flooding are a significant problem in selling. Many banks require buyers to purchase comprehensive flood insurance, which is not only a lot more costly, but also harder to find. Subsidies for the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) . ...
