WTF you can do to survive WFH

Many of us have been working from home (WFH) for over six months now. Work seems to spread into every corner of our lives, whether it’s responding to late-night emails, scheduling Zoom meetings around kid’s lessons or keeping current on company issues. Throw the inconveniences of pandemic protocols into the mix and you’ve got a toxic formula for burn-out.

Aside from taking a week off in Cape Cod (which I just did and highly recommend), there are a few things you can do to avoid mental burn-out and lessen the impact of working from the kitchen table.

Establish a business strategy.

When you set up a strategic model, you’ll be able to make room for needed extra time in the future, or can appoint someone (your husband/wife/partner/ can come in handy for this,) who can take over parts of your business operations. Strategic thinking will allow you to focus on the parts of your business that can make it grow and deliver a top client experience.

Imagine your “Perfect Business Week.”

Think what a perfect week would be like. Keep it realistic, but include all the things involved in making that happen. What do you love to do, and what activities do you hate? Start with your perfect day, and extrapolate from there, considering the week on a personal level first, then on a business level. The goal here is finding extra time for yourself.

Decide what’s not on the table.

Set down a list of things that don’t change in your plan no matter what. With all the new challenges thrown at us every day, having some “non-negotiables” will help to keep us from feeling overwhelmed. Instead of giving in to problems, learn how to overcome them. When you feel in control of things, you’ll be able to give 110 percent to clients, friends and family.

How do you get to Carnegie Hall?

Take some time and practice, practice, practice your newly needed business skills. Use technology that you aren’t comfortable or unfamiliar with that will give you a way to keep up with many of your competitors who are also on top of their game.

Productivity is possible whether you're in the office or in the kitchen. Get control of the new "normals" and find ways to make them part of your daily life.
